Well we set off next Monday, 18th, Rocket, Tich and myself, for what will be I am sure an interesting ride. We have not set a time to do this, but I would expect somewhere around 8-10 weeks, if it takes longer then so be it.

We will be camping most of the time to keep costs down, staying in caravan parks maybe one or two days a week to catch up on stuff. Most of our camps will hopefully be bush type, stop where it looks good, I've got the wikicamps app to help with free camp spots etc.

Tich and I are both having new tyres fitted this week, Avon cobra front and Commander 2 rears, so we shall see how the wear differs. This trip will be approx. 15-20 thousand kms, we are not strictly staying with highway one, detouring wherever we feel like it and taking breaks whenever but will still try to cover 400 - 500 kms per riding day.

As I will be only be carrying an iPhone 4 , updates may be sparse due to lack of coverage from Telstra and the "I can't be fucking bothered" syndrome that seems to come over me once I'm on the road.

Personally I am looking forward to the open, quieter parts of our great country, most of which I have done before, but in 4x4's, it's something I have wanted to do since I started riding long distances while on leave in the Navy, aged about 18, so it's been a while.

Nearly forgot, Rocket (and maybe me) will do some Facebook updating, Tich will just send smoke signals!!

Have a great trip guys & keep the rubber side down.. green with envy.

I went 1/2 way 'around the block' this time last year; 6 weeks & 12500k's: did Great Ocean Rd, crossed the Snowies, up east coast to Pt Douglas; then crossed outback Queensland, turned right to Darwin and back home down the centre. Only plan we had was to be in Adelaide River for Anzac Day dawn service (our last stand against the Japs in WWII) and around 7000 other people apparently had the same plan. It was great..

You sound well travelled Leethal; don't want to sound like I'm trying to give advice, only comment on some of my own adventure:

Only issue with the 'bird' was a headlight globe that failed on my only night ride; leaving Humpty Doo Hotel to get back into Darwin after tea.
Changed oil & filter in Cairns and new rubber on arriving in Adelaide.

Met 3 x ex-servicemen from the States who were doing the whole way around the map and their plan was to do it in 6 weeks (had a great night with them at Daly Waters Hotel). Another couple we met on an adventurer hoped to do that trip in 4 weeks, so I don't know if they saw anything but road. Your plan will allow for rest days, or when you find a place you really like and decide to stay longer.

Found riding outback a hoot but no stock fences made life interesting; although saw more road kill than live ones. Was told cattle find the bitumen at night because it is warming for them and they get cleaned up by road trains. Daytime they mostly just look at you then keep on chewing grass but I learnt to be wary of any calves.

Carried a 10L jerry can for if we had to ride into the breeze on a long stretch but ended up not needing it for fuel, so carried some water in case we faced an emergency.

It certainly put into perspective for me, just how big & beautiful this great country of ours is

Bucket list item: to do the other 1/2 of 'the block' but that won't be for another 3yrs 167days & 6hrs or so, my phone app says..

PS would like to make it to a flocking one day.. met Frank from Naracoorte on a Santa Run down here, the year before last. Couldn't make the Barossa weekend and have to decide between the Oct flocking or the Moto GP; if not maybe next year or if and when you ride through Mt Gambier on your adventure, consider me another option to Wikicamps. A mate operates the best caravan pk in town and we both like to imbibe in alcohol, so with the bikes, there's two things we seem to have in common

Thanks fellas for the thoughts and advice.

Scott if we are in your vicinity I will try to make contact prior, the van park sounds good, we are planning on staying in these every now and then to clean up and rest our bodies, or if it's pissing down.

As Rocket and I are ex servicemen we will be looking for an RSL come Anzac Day to pay our respects and raise a glass, probably not going to hang around in NSW for long due to school holidays.

I will try to keep checking on here but as a lot of our camps will be off the side of the road somewhere phone service is usually crap.

No worries Lee.. whatever works for you guys; no stress.

Had school holiday issues in NSW too; only way of riding out of Sydney's north shore was lane filtering & no accommodation available in Coffs Harbour.

Only guessing you'll have Great Ocean Rd on your route.. if you do, you'll likely pass through here and the most scenic route is to continue up the coastal towns & The Coorong.

I'll PM you my contact no. but no pressure.. it may be that timing sees you ride straight on through.

Cheers & safe travelling guys..

Ray, all I can give you is the first couple of days and this may change due to NSW school holidays.

First night , Apsley Falls camp ground near Walcha
2nd, Grey Gum cafe, Putty Road
3rd possibly around Nowra as Rocket wants to look around having spent some time there in his Navy days.

After that it will be wherever we get to in the afternoons.
